Pregnancy is full of surprises, and our recent ultrasound was no exception.
My better half is four months pregnant now. We are expecting our second. Two weeks ago, my wife (more her than me, of course) had the gender determination ultrasound. We went to the maternity clinic first thing in the morning since our appointment was at 08:45 AM.
We took our eldest with us. He was pretty sure the baby in mommy’s belly would turn out to be a girl.
Ultrasound is not so ultra
We were invited in by the sonographer.
My wife immediately lay down on the examination table, and my son sat on my lap in a chair next to the table. Warm gel was spread on my wife’s belly, and the first images appeared on the screen.
The sonographer first needed to focus, of course, but soon we could see the baby from all angles—arms, legs, head, and so on.
“Yes, I think I’ve seen it!” I exclaimed. I’m not an expert, but I know a little about what to look for when determining the gender. I thought I saw a prominent white part between the legs.
“What do you think?” my wife and the sonographer asked in unison. I replied that I thought I saw a penis.
“Let’s take a look,” said the sonographer.
A telling silence
Minutes passed, and we saw all sorts of things, but what I saw earlier did not reappear.
My wife said, “Well, I guess you didn’t see it correctly, haha,” and the sonographer confirmed this.
One by one, the images came into view, and with each image, she explained what we were seeing.
No prominent part between the legs. So, we’re having a girl!
She changed her mind!
Then the sonographer continued. She seemed to be checking a few things.
Since my wife is on medication, that’s not unusual.
But her silence was for another reason. We sensed doubt. On the screen, there were now images where it looked like there was a prominent part between the legs… A boy after all?!
“Look, if I had seen this picture at the beginning, I would never have said the baby was a girl.” She showed us several photos from different angles, and indeed there was a prominent part.
We are having a boy!
Second opinion
Because of the flip-flopping about the sex, the sonographer wanted us to get a second opinion with her colleague.
At the end of the day, we had to go back to the maternity clinic to have another go at the gender determination.
This sonographer looked from different angles than the former one and was very decisive, pretty quickly. She confirmed that my wife is pregnant with a boy.
So it is a boy!
After spending the weekend telling almost everyone close to us that my wife is expecting a boy, a new week began.
Last week, we were informed that from now on, we will be officially monitored by the gynecologist at the hospital. This is due to my wife’s use of pain medication for her rheumatic complaints.
Hospital check
On Monday, the first day of the new week, we headed straight to the hospital.
The first appointment under the new protocol was under the supervision of the gynecologist. Today, we had an appointment with a midwife.
There was some kind of intake, and of course, the baby was checked and listened to.
“Today, we can check the gender,” the midwife said. “If you want to know, of course,” she added.
We indicated that we were curious and definitely wanted to know! We already knew, of course, but an extra check is always good.
The confusion kicks in
“I’m not very experienced in doing ultrasounds yet,” the midwife said, jokingly adding, “No guarantees, haha!”.
She showed us almost the same images we saw a few days earlier. Then she said, “I think it’s going to be a girl!”
You can imagine our confusion. Now, we are just waiting for the 20-week ultrasound. Boy or girl, it doesn’t matter to us. We wish for a healthy baby, and the gender is truly irrelevant to us.
Have you ever experienced something like this? Let us know!
